Windrush Day Assembly

Windrush Day was celebrated on 22nd June 2024. At Parkside Studio College, we used our most recent assembly to highlight the day by looking at the journey and impact of the Windrush generation on modern British society. We looked at the labour shortage created by the catastrophe of WWII, which led to the migration of Caribbean people to the ‘Mother Country’ on the HMT Empire Windrush.

We briefly looked at the challenges that were faced and how these challenges led to the formation of the Notting Hill Carnival to ease tension by celebrating Caribbean culture. Finally, we looked at notable people whose parents were from the Windrush generation and their contributions to sports, politics, film, and popular music genres created in the UK.
